The Gap Gig was thought up back in 1998 when Bill Jackson and John Calvert met in a local hostelry in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. Both John and Bill had been listening to jazz for over 45 years frequenting The Ronnie Scott Club, The Bulls Head Barnes, The 100 Oxford Street and many more obscure jazz dives around the London area. They immediately thought it would be a great idea to re-enact their early days and arranged to hit London and listen to good jazz again. Not an easy task, both of them having a desire for a good pint whilst listening to good jazz, so they took to using public transport. By the time they had paid for tickets to London, taxis, entry to clubs, high prices for drinks, something to eat and then having to leave early to get connections back to Goring plus being some £200 poorer, they decided to bring the musicians to them. The club atmosphere is always good. There is a bar serving
real local ale at only £2 a pint, good wines and the usual soft drinks. The
gigs are monthly – usually the 2nd Friday of every month – and
a lot of the visitors use the local pubs and restaurants to eat beforehand.
